Library Addition - Northbrook 3 story, 35,600 sq. ft. addition to an existing Miesian style building. Structural engineering especially challenging because of the Architectural design and tightness of the site. Located adjacent to a flood plain and with the attendant restrictions, Part of structure was on caissons, and part on spread footings. Exposed roof trusses were fabricated of various size pipes and curvature of the roof with the deck the strong way required research to find fabricator to curve the deck. Composite joists used to provide maximum clearance for fire department access. National joist competition honorable mention award recognized first regional use of composite joists for Library loading. | Library Addition - Niles 2 challenging 2 story additions totaling 80,000 sq. ft. made difficult by the integration of the new structure with the existing structure and the requirement that as much of the existing structure as possible be saved. |
